Issue 001 (Fall 1992) launches Applied Bio-Dynamics as the quarterly newsletter of the Josephine Porter Institute (JPI). More than an introduction, it is a working charter: test assumptions about biodynamic preparations, invite practitioners to share results, coordinate research, and build an economic base that can sustain preparation-making.

Issue Overview

“A Newsletter Is Born.” The opening editorial says the newsletter should be a forum for testing assumptions, warning that dogma and stagnation begin when assumptions are no longer tested. Planned departments include articles on particular preparations, seasonal farming and gardening, Rudolf Steiner’s agricultural lectures, nutrition, questions and answers, reports from readers, board reports, events, and research updates. Nutrition is announced here as a future column, not presented as a full nutrition article in this issue.

“A JPI Perspective on Biodynamics.” The article traces biodynamic agriculture to Rudolf Steiner’s 1924 Agriculture Course and presents the nine preparations as a coordinated whole. It asks readers to think in terms of forces rather than chemical substances, describes the BD 502–507 compost preparations as mediating between the limestone polarity of BD 500 and the silica polarity of BD 501 and BD 508, and emphasizes care in making, stirring, spraying, and storage. These are historical and interpretive claims from 1992, not a substitute for current JPI guidance.

“Searching for an Economic Reality: A Solution.” The issue proposes an associative, CSA-like annual contract. A practitioner supports JPI at an acreage level and agrees to store preparations properly; JPI supplies a newsletter subscription and the preparations needed for that acreage. The model also asks participants to contribute field observations, provides research materials at little more than shipping cost, and allows supporters to sponsor preparation access for growers with limited means.

The 1992 example sets the annual contribution at $60 for a backyard garden of one acre or less and $120 for a five-acre market garden, with larger farms asked to request a quote. The one-acre plan specifies spring and fall shipments: spring includes compost preparations BD 502–507, BD 500, BD 508, Barrel Compost, and two units of BD 501; fall includes BD 502–507, BD 500, and Barrel Compost. These prices and ordering arrangements are archival and are not current JPI terms.

“Michaelmas.” Published during the Michaelmas season, the issue closes by linking courage, patience, and service to agricultural practice. Its spiritual reflection presents preparation work and the healing of the Earth as deeds undertaken for others rather than for self-interest.

Additional Departments and Notes

  • Organizational transition: A September 1, 1992 open letter announces that, effective October 1, production and distribution of the biodynamic preparations and preparation-making materials would move from joint responsibility with the Bio-Dynamic Farming and Gardening Association to JPI alone. The organizations would continue to cooperate while JPI assumed a clearer operational and financial responsibility for preparation work.
  • JPI mission: The issue describes JPI as a living memorial to Josephine Porter, founded to produce quality biodynamic preparations based on Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual-scientific research. Education and research are named alongside production, all directed toward the stated aim that “the Earth may be healed.”
