Frequently Asked Questions

What are biodynamic preparations?

JPI lists nine core biodynamic preparations: BD 500 horn manure, a soil-directed spray; BD 501 horn silica, a fine foliar spray; BD 502–507, the six compost preparations; and BD 508 horsetail (Equisetum arvense), used as a fresh-tea foliar or fermented-tea soil spray. Growers use these small quantities of specially prepared natural materials alongside good organic and ecological practices to support living soil, compost, and plant vitality. Each preparation has its own amount, mixing, target, and timing; follow the current JPI instructions: https://www.jpibiodynamics.org/pages/making-using-bd-preps

How do biodynamic preparations benefit the soil?

The complete BD 502–507 set helps produce biologically active compost for soil. In a 2026 controlled study using Italian-supplied preparations, mature compost treated with all six supported greater growth of selected compost-associated bacteria at 120 days than untreated compost. Water-soluble extract from the treated compost supported about tenfold more growth than extract from untreated compost at that time.

Why is dew important in biodynamics?

In this article, morning dew is part of the gentle outdoor ripening environment for hanging herbal preparations. The article describes a seasonal rhythm of moisture, mild morning light, and shelter from stronger afternoon sun; follow the specific JPI instructions for each preparation.

What role do flowers play in biodynamic practices?

Flowers supply the plant material for four compost preparations: yarrow (BD 502), chamomile (BD 503), dandelion (BD 506), and valerian (BD 507). Each is processed by its own method before the finished preparation is used with compost. This article portrays their ripening as a gift of floral vitality to the soil.
