Frequently Asked Questions

What did the BD 507 basil cold-exposure comparison find?

Kachina Via’s basil comparison, reported in JPI’s Applied Biodynamics (Fall 1998), used 16 plants per treatment and 18 simulated cold exposures. One week later, BD 507-sprayed basil had the lowest visible-damage rating: 1.5 out of 10, compared with 3.0 for unsprayed basil and 4.5 for water-sprayed basil (lower meant less damage). JPI also gives directions for using BD 507 valerian as a frost spray and as part of the compost set. When should I spray Valerian for frost protection?

For frost-season spraying, JPI says to apply valerian in the evening before predicted frost and again early in the morning for heavy frost. Stir one unit (21 drops) in 3 gallons of warm water for 15 minutes for up to an acre; use a proportional amount for a smaller area.

What is BD #507?

BD 507 is JPI’s fermented valerian-blossom preparation. It serves as a frost-season crop spray and as the liquid sixth preparation in the complete BD 502–507 compost set.

Can I use Valerian for compost preparations?

Yes. BD 507 is the liquid member of JPI’s complete BD 502–507 compost set. For a pile of up to 15 tons, stir one unit in one gallon of warm water for 10 minutes, pour half into the sixth hole, and spray half over the pile. In a Washington State University experiment, compost treated with the complete set had higher alkaline-phosphatase activity at day 100 (p = 0.0085). Source: https://hdl.handle.net/2376/145
