Questions fréquemment posées

What is the Biodynamic® Oak Bark Preparation used for?

The finished JPI white-oak (Quercus alba) BD 505 is used with the BD 502–507 set in a managed compost pile. Biodynamic growers associate it with calcium balance and plant resilience. A 2026 laboratory study of an Italian, European-oak (Quercus robur) BD 505 measured the highest antioxidant activity among the preparations compared and growth of selected compost-associated bacteria. Apply the purchased preparation directly to compost following the current JPI directions.

How do I use the Biodynamic® Oak Bark Preparation?

Use the finished preparation as part of a complete BD 502–507 set. Make six holes evenly across the compost pile and place this unit into one of the first five holes, about halfway down the pile. Close the hole with old compost or good soil so no air pocket remains. One complete set treats up to 15 tons of compost; use the full set on smaller piles also.

What is the main ingredient in the Biodynamic® Oak Bark Preparation?

The main ingredient is oak bark, specifically from Quercus alba.

Can I use the Biodynamic® Oak Bark Preparation on its own?

The standard JPI compost method uses the finished BD 505 with BD 502, 503, 504, 506, and 507 as a complete set. Place BD 505 in its own hole in the pile; prepare and apply BD 507 separately as directed. Follow the current JPI BD 502–507 compost instructions for the full sequence.
