The complete BD 502–507 set supports compost’s biological activity. In a 2026 controlled experiment using Italian-supplied preparations, mature compost treated with all six supported greater growth of selected compost-associated bacteria than untreated compost, especially in mixed manure-and-green-material compost. Water-soluble extracts from treated compost at 120 days supported about tenfold more growth than extracts from untreated compost. A separate 27-year field experiment found a distinct soil microbial substrate-use profile after manure compost was prepared with the full set.
How much compost can the BD 502-507 set treat?

One complete set treats up to 15 tons of manure or compost. JPI recommends using the full set on smaller piles, too.

BD 507 is the valerian-flower liquid that completes the six-preparation compost set. Biodynamic growers use it in relation to warmth and phosphorus processes. JPI directs users to stir it in one gallon of lukewarm water for 10 minutes, pour half into the sixth hole, and mist the rest over the pile. In a compost-pile study, the full BD 502–507 set had higher alkaline-phosphatase activity at day 100 than untreated compost; this enzyme helps release phosphorus from organic material.
