Pest and Disease Control — Balancing Life on the Farm
Partager
What Is Biodynamic Pest Control?
Biodynamic pest management treats the farm as a connected living system. Begin by identifying the organism and the conditions that favor it, improve soil and compost care, crop rotation, airflow, and habitat for natural enemies, then choose a suitable targeted response and observe the crop.
What Does Research Show About Biodiversity and Pests?
In a long-term Swiss DOK comparison, the herbicide-free bio-organic and biodynamic wheat systems had more generalist predators, including about twice as many spiders, and fewer aphids than the conventional systems. The study documents a positive biodiversity advantage in the complete organic and biodynamic farming systems.
How Does JPI Describe Making a Weed-Seed Pepper?
A biodynamic weed pepper is a species-specific preparation made from the target weed’s reproductive material—usually seed, or a rhizome for a spreading perennial. JPI documents complete ash, char, gentle toast, and wet putrefaction as distinct methods.
Applied Biodynamics Issue 027 gives a direct ripe-seed ash method: collect mature target seed, burn it completely, grind or rub the ash with clean soil or sand, and scatter the mixture over the target ground. The issue also cites Lilly Kolisko’s four-year thistle treatment, in which seed deterioration appeared first, thistles were very scarce in the third year, and after four years of repeated treatment they disappeared completely from the treated area.
Stewardship and the Farm Ecosystem
Biodynamic pest work joins species-specific treatment with stewardship of the whole farm. Strengthen soil and crop conditions, protect beneficial organisms and natural enemies, use the least disruptive suitable intervention, and follow the response over time. These practices support a resilient, diverse farm ecosystem.
