About Demeter certification

One unit is 1 teaspoon.

At a Glance:

What it does:
BD 503 is used with the complete BD 502–507 set for biodynamic compost care. Growers traditionally associate chamomile with nitrogen, calcium, and balanced decomposition. A 2026 in-vitro study measured increased proliferation of selected compost-associated bacteria in mature compost treated with the full set.

How to use:
Use the finished preparation as part of a complete BD 502–507 set. Make six holes evenly across the compost pile and place this unit into one of the first five holes, about halfway down the pile. Close the hole with old compost or good soil so no air pocket remains. One complete set treats up to 15 tons of compost; use the full set on smaller piles also.

Ingredients and preparation:
Finished BD 503 made from German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) flower heads matured inside a cow’s small intestine during winter burial; not loose chamomile blossoms.

Evidence note: In a 2026 in-vitro study, mature compost treated with the complete BD 502–507 set supported greater proliferation of selected compost-associated bacteria after 120 days than untreated compost, with the strongest response in mixed manure-and-plant compost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Biodynamic Chamomile Preparation?

BD 503 is JPI’s finished German chamomile preparation, used as the chamomile member of the BD 502–507 compost set. Biodynamic growers associate it with nitrogen, calcium, and balanced decomposition. In a 2026 in-vitro study, mature compost treated with the complete set supported greater proliferation of selected compost-associated bacteria after 120 days than untreated compost, especially with mixed manure-and-plant material.

How do I use the BD 503 Chamomile Preparation?

Use the finished preparation as part of a complete BD 502–507 set. Make six holes evenly across the compost pile and place this unit into one of the first five holes, about halfway down the pile. Close the hole with old compost or good soil so no air pocket remains. One complete set treats up to 15 tons of compost; use the full set on smaller piles also.

What ingredients are in the BD 503 Chamomile Preparation?

JPI’s finished BD 503 is made from German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) flower heads matured inside a cow’s small intestine during winter burial. It is a prepared compost input, not loose dried chamomile blossoms.

Is the BD 503 preparation part of a larger compost set?

Yes. BD 503 is the chamomile member of the six-preparation BD 502–507 compost set. Apply the finished unit in its own hole with the other set members; JPI’s full-set directions apply even to smaller compost piles.
