Issue Overview

“Sequential Spraying—Illusion, Remarkable Coincidence, or Reality?” — Hugh J. Courtney. Courtney says the method arose during a 1988 drought when, uncertain which preparation might help, he applied all nine in a short sequence. The six compost preparations were delivered together through Barrel Compost, followed separately by BD 508, BD 500, and BD 501. He recounts rain, improved moisture, crop or weed boundaries, and several “failures” after sequences in different places.

The article repeatedly admits that times, dates, procedures, preparation quality, and weather were not recorded consistently. Its claim that significant rain followed more than 90 percent of over 100 applications is therefore presented without a usable dataset. Courtney says only “remarkable coincidences” could be claimed at that point and asks participants to submit standardized before-and-after records. He also warns that attempts to influence weather can encourage overconfidence, material motives, and what he calls a “Sorcerer's Apprentice” state. Celestial-period explanations offered for successes and failures belong to his interpretation; the issue does not test them independently.

The Published Sequence

  • Day 1, evening: stir Barrel Compost for 20 minutes and spray the target area.
  • Day 2, near sunrise: stir fermented BD 508 for 20 minutes and spray the same area.
  • Day 2, evening: stir BD 500 for one hour and spray the same area.
  • Day 3, near sunrise: stir BD 501 for one hour and spray the same area.

The full sequence was intended to fit within roughly 36 hours to three days. Courtney favored a Leaf period for drought relief, while the sidebar also mentions new or full moon timing and warns about “difficult” periods. Those are stated as working hypotheses and practitioner rules, not demonstrated variables.

“The Milk Spray / The Milk & Honey Spray” (Sidebar 1). For plants under sudden insect pressure or stress, the sidebar mixes one part milk with nine parts water—ten parts total. Optional honey is added at one part per 100 parts of finished spray, dissolved first in warm water. The mixture is stirred for 20 minutes and applied as a medium-to-fine mist. Courtney reports that beneficial insects often increased rapidly after use, but the sidebar provides no control treatment or quantified trial.

Sequential Spraying Report Form and Research Question 5 (Sidebars 3 and 4). The report sheet asks for the time and date of every preparation, forecast or weather map information, elapsed time to rain, amount and area of rain, and other observations. Research Question 5 asks whether the sequence actually relieves drought or encourages precipitation. This structure is a proposal for collecting comparable evidence; it does not repair the missing records behind the earlier success-rate claim.

“Ehrenfried Pfeiffer: A Profile” — Gisela Franceschelli. The profile follows Pfeiffer from his 1899 birth and 1919 introduction to Rudolf Steiner through his technical work at the Goetheanum, preparation-making for the 1924 Agriculture Course, European and American research, the sensitive-crystallization and chromatography methods, farm and medical-laboratory work, and leadership in North American biodynamics. It emphasizes his effort to connect qualitative pattern observation with practical soil, compost, plant, and food questions. A substantial book list separates biographies from Pfeiffer's own agricultural, nutritional, and testing works.

“Dr. Pfeiffer's BD Compost Starter and BD Field Spray” — Hugh Courtney with Chris Stearn, Ph.D. Stearn describes Pfeiffer's products as ways to carry the preparations into small compost piles, hot-fermentation systems, soil, and waste streams. The manufacturer-side description lists selected microorganisms, a vegetable-enzyme base, the BD 502-507 compost preparations, and stirred BD 500. Courtney interprets the products as sophisticated compound preparations whose effect depends on both biological ingredients and their manufacture. He also warns that convenience can become an incomplete substitute if users neglect BD 501, BD 508, or broader farm practice. These product-effect statements are the contributors' explanations, not comparisons supported by trial data in this issue.

“Nature . . . A Great Composer” — Betsy Cashen, R.D. Cashen argues that a food is more than an inventory of isolated nutrients. Her musical-score analogy contrasts an original composition with the same notes rearranged, then proposes observational clues—taste, smell, color, form, texture, growing conditions, elemental relationships, history, cultural use, and bodily response. She applies the same whole-versus-parts distinction to compost: component analysis can describe contents, but not necessarily the quality of the living whole.

Editorial and Contract Notes

JPI reports 77 newsletter subscribers and 86 growers with associative contracts in 1993. It introduces a 1994 contract option without preparation storage: participants could specify delivery close to intended use, pay extra for more than two shipments, and avoid keeping preparations on hand. Issue 006 is strongest when read as the record of a transition from striking anecdote to proposed documentation.
