Issue 014 documents how JPI staff, growers, and volunteers sustained biodynamic preparation work during a year of change. “A Word of Thanks” credits gardeners, farmers, herb contributors, writers, customers, and volunteers. The surviving pages connect that community support with a major expansion of preparation-making responsibilities.
Pfeiffer preparation stewardship
JPI reports that on August 22, 1995, it reached an agreement with the Pfeiffer Foundation and General Compost Corporation to produce Pfeiffer BD Compost Starter and BD Field Spray Concentrate, together with agricultural and horticultural distribution rights. The newsletter describes these Pfeiffer preparations as products made and distributed for more than forty years. JPI saw continuing their production and careful distribution as part of its mission to make quality biodynamic preparations available (printed pp. 1 and 5).
Building capacity together
To take on the new work, JPI described moving production equipment into a nearby barn and planning a 36-by-60-foot, barn-like facility with space for preparation making and related activities. The institute invited donations and volunteer labor for construction. Its associative-contract notice also described how advance commitments helped schedule spring preparation orders (printed pp. 2 and 5).
Volunteer preparation work
In the surviving continuation of its year-end report, JPI credits interim staff and volunteers with stuffing 1,000 horns for 500X and 800 for BD 500, packing more than 42 pounds dry weight of chamomile blossoms for BD 503, processing about 36 cow skulls, and collecting and grinding oak bark for BD 505 (printed p. 5).
The issue also announces an early JPI “Home Page” and explains that publishing capacity might be adjusted while JPI concentrated on preparation making. Together, these surviving notices show how community labor, production planning, and education supported access to biodynamic preparations.
