# Applied Biodynamics — Issue 032 (Spring 2001)

## Ruth Zinniker’s living connection to early biodynamics

Zinniker describes growing up on a large biodynamic estate in Silesia, fleeing the Soviet advance in January 1945, completing agricultural and household training in postwar Germany, and moving to the United States. After marrying Dick Zinniker, she helped expand biodynamic practice on the family farm in Wisconsin.

The interview shows how preparation making grew from household and farm work into a regional event. By 2000, a fall gathering could include about seventy-five people and 500 horns, with experienced makers supervising each preparation, followed by a shared meal, music, and a bonfire. Spring dandelion-picking gatherings supplied JPI with as much as eighteen pounds of dried blossoms. The combination of trained supervision, repeated participation, and community scale is one of the issue’s clearest operational lessons.

## The Zinniker farm system

Smith describes a 165-acre farm with 120 tillable acres, twenty-nine Holstein cows plus young stock, poultry, home-grown livestock feed, and roughly ninety-five percent of the family’s food raised on the farm. Zinniker’s reported preparation rhythm includes:

-   two sets of [BD 502–506](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bd-502-507-set) added whenever roughly two tons of barn manure extend the windrow;
-   [BD 507](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bd-507) sprayed across the windrow two to three weeks before spreading;
-   [Barrel Compound](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bc) used in the barn when weather or timing makes the full method impractical;
-   [BD 500 horn manure](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bd-500) hand-stirred and applied before planting;
-   [BD 501 horn silica](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bd-501) sprayed in the morning after crop cover develops; and
-   BD 507, [BD 508 horsetail](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bd-508), nettle tea, and comfrey ferment used in response to particular conditions.

## Observation, limits, and testable claims

Zinniker is unusually candid about uncertainty. She says the sequential spray did not bring rain in one trial, recounts an over-vigorous drought response followed by seven inches of rain and crop loss, and notes that her farm had not run controlled BD 501 versus BD 501(5x) tests. Her advice to beginners is direct: first become a good farmer or gardener, then observe and research rather than believe an authority automatically.

Several striking anecdotes invite controlled repetition: strawberries reportedly surviving a 26°F frost after BD 507; snails disappearing after a combined BD 508 and BD 501(5x) spray; and preparations maturing differently when buried in Zinniker soil versus a previously conventional field. A strong trial would split one preparation batch among randomized replicated burial sites, standardize depth and retrieval date, code samples, and compare moisture, pH, chemistry, microbial community, appearance, odor, and later compost or plant response. For spray claims, use untreated and water-only controls, count pests or frost injury before and after, and repeat across weather events.

## What the seminar reflection actually records

Tony Davis reports a June 2000 JPI seminar with hands-on nettle harvest, yarrow retrieval, and Barrel Compound burial. He values direct participation, questions, humor, and staff experience. He also names quality practices: harvest only the needed plant parts, prevent contamination, keep preparations underground for the prescribed period, and avoid shortcuts that compromise the material. The article is a favorable participant reflection; it does not present systematic outcome data or a participant-error analysis.

## Dandelion and nutrition

Chris Korrow’s short essay asks readers to value dandelion as food, bee forage, a soil-building plant, and the source plant for [BD 506](https://go.jpibd.org/product-bd-506). Jim and Jenni Muir review Kolisko’s 1932 _Nutrition_ lectures. Their summary covers the sensory phase of eating, individual dietary needs, fermentation, vitamins, seasonality, artificial light, silica, and Kolisko’s spiritual account of living processes. It is a review of a historical anthroposophical text, not a controlled nutrition study. Its testable questions—such as how light regime, harvest maturity, and cultivation affect composition and sensory quality—can be addressed with modern replicated measurements.

3.  Record failed as well as favorable outcomes, including soil, crop, pest, disease, yield, quality, and management differences.
4.  For dandelion harvest, confirm species and record flowering stage, location, weather, fresh and dry weight, contamination, drying, and storage.
